Location & Access
Asakusa Station is strategically located in the heart of the Asakusa district of Taitō, Tokyo. It serves as a vital transportation nexus for both locals and tourists exploring this historic area. While sharing a name, it's important to note that this station is distinct from the Tsukuba Express Asakusa Station, which is situated on the opposite side of Sensō-ji Temple and is not considered a direct transfer point.
The station is operated by three different railway companies, each with its own specific location within the broader Asakusa area: Tokyo Metro is in Asakusa 1-chome, Tobu Railway in Hanakawado 1-chome, and Toei Subway in Komagata 1-chome. This multi-operator setup ensures comprehensive coverage and convenient access to various parts of Tokyo and beyond. A bus terminal is also connected, further enhancing its accessibility.
Railway Lines
Asakusa Station is a significant terminal for multiple railway lines. It is one of the termini for the Tobu Skytree Line, offering connections to destinations like Tokyo Skytree and beyond towards Tōbu–Nikkō or Kinugawa–Onsen. It also serves as the terminus for the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, one of Tokyo's oldest subway lines, providing direct access to major areas like Ueno, Ginza, and Shibuya. Additionally, the Toei Asakusa Line (station code A-18) passes through, linking Asakusa to Haneda and Narita airports via through services, and other key areas like Higashi-nihombashi and Oshiage.
Station History
The Toei Subway portion of Asakusa Station officially opened on December 4, 1960. Before October 1945, this specific Toei station was known as Asakusa Kaminarimon Station, reflecting its proximity to the iconic Kaminarimon Gate of Sensō-ji Temple. The station has seen significant daily boardings, with 20,133 recorded in FY2024 for the Toei line, highlighting its continued importance as a transportation hub.
