Tonkatsu Nanaido has earned a reputation as one of Tokyo's top katsu destinations, distinguished by its meticulous, low-temperature frying technique. This method produces a remarkably light, crisp coating that allows the high-quality ingredients to shine, rather than overwhelming them in oil. While the pork katsu is excellent, the true standout for many is the Amagi shamo chicken katsu, served as two distinct cuts (thigh and breast) to highlight their contrasting textures and deep flavour.

Guests consistently praise the star dishes: the aforementioned chicken katsu, a juicy house-made menchi-katsu (minced pork cutlet with butter-sweated onions), and various premium pork cuts like Iwate Ganton loin and fillet. The experience is rounded out by high-quality Aizu Koshihikari rice, flavourful miso soup, and shredded cabbage, all with generous free refills. The attentive staff are often noted for offering tips on the best way to enjoy the meal, suggesting condiments like salt, soy sauce, or the house sauce for different bites.

The main drawbacks are practical. As a walk-in only establishment, long queues are common, and it's wise to arrive 20–40 minutes before opening to secure a seat in the first seating. Popular cuts can sell out later in the lunch service. A few diners find the meal can feel heavy or greasy after several pieces, a natural consequence of a fried meal, however well-executed.

Reviewers find it offers good value, with a typical lunch costing between ¥2,000 and ¥2,999. Recent examples include the Amagi shamo chicken katsu set for ¥2,680–¥2,948, and the house-made menchi-katsu for ¥528–¥638 as an add-on. The generous portions and free refills help balance the cost of the premium ingredients.

Please note: The restaurant has announced plans to relocate to Yotsuya. The current Jingumae location is expected to continue operating under the name "Jingumae Tonkatsu Nanai-do". Please check the restaurant's official channels for the latest information.
