Sumibi Yaki Yuji (炭火焼 ゆうじ) is a bastion of old-school Tokyo yakiniku, a place where the thick, flavourful smoke from the binchotan charcoal grills is as much a part of the experience as the meat itself. Located in Shibuya, this is not a quiet, refined dinner spot; it's a boisterous, cramped, and perpetually busy restaurant dedicated to one thing: extraordinarily fresh offal, or horumon, prepared with expert care.

Guests consistently praise the pristine quality of the meat, which sets Yuji apart. Favourites include the rare heart sashimi (hatsu-sashi), fresh liver (rebā), top-grade tongue (jō-tan), and various intestines (horumon/kopuchan). The staff are known to helpfully recommend a balanced selection of cuts. The experience is unapologetically rustic, and diners should be prepared for the downsides: the ventilation is poor, and the smell of smoke will cling to your hair and clothes. The space is tight, waits can be long, and popular items often sell out early.

Despite the spartan setting, reviewers almost unanimously agree that Sumibi Yaki Yuji offers excellent value. A typical dinner costs between ¥6,000 and ¥8,000 per person. For reference, reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥1,600 for top-grade tongue (jō-tan), ¥900 for liver (rebā), ¥780 for intestines (horumon), and about ¥1,000 for the closing beef-tendon curry.

  • Getting There: Sumibi Yaki Yuji is about a 10-minute walk from Shibuya Station.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Reservations: Booking is highly recommended and available for parties of two or more. The restaurant offers two slots: 4:00 PM–6:00 PM and from 6:00 PM onwards. Expect to queue if you do not have a reservation.
  • Atmosphere: The restaurant is extremely smoky from the charcoal grills (it is a non-smoking venue otherwise). It is advisable to wear clothes you don't mind getting smoky.
  • Service Note: The menu may be in Japanese only. While many have a great experience, some international visitors have reported curt service or being refused entry. Experiences vary, but it's a risk to be aware of.
  • Seating: Seating is at the counter and at small tables. There are no private rooms.
  • Children: Children are welcome.
  • Parking: No dedicated parking is available, but there are paid car parks nearby.
