Prior to its current designation, it was known as Baba Station until 1913, then Ōtsu from 1913 to 1921, and reverted to Baba from 1921 to 1934. Its current name, Zeze, is notable for being a 'difficult-to-read' (難読駅) kanji, adding a unique charm to its identity.
