Throughout its operational period, it was known for its low passenger numbers, with an average of 0 daily passengers recorded in 2013. This low ridership ultimately led to its closure on March 3, 2017, as part of JR Hokkaido's efforts to streamline its network. Interestingly, Warabitai Station held the distinction of being the last station alphabetically when listing all JR stations in Japan.
