Wakayamadaigakumae Station opened on April 1, 2012, making it a relatively new addition to the Nankai Electric Railway network. It was established as a petition station, requested by Wakayama Prefecture and Wakayama City. This station marked the first new station on the Nankai Main Line in 46 years since Shin-Imamiya Station, and the first new station for Nankai Electric Railway in 13 years since Kishi River Line's Kotsu Center-mae Station (now Wakayama Electric Railway). Its strategic placement underscores its importance in supporting the local community and the university.
