Location & Access

Shimbashi Station (新橋駅, Shinbashi-eki), literally meaning "New Bridge Station," is a vital transportation hub situated in Tokyo's Minato Ward. Its central location places it directly south of Tokyo Station and a convenient 10-minute walk from the upscale Ginza shopping district. While the JR East, Tokyo Metro, and Toei Subway stations are located in Shimbashi Nichome, the Yurikamome station is in Higashi-Shimbashi Itchome.

Railway Lines

Shimbashi Station is a bustling interchange served by multiple railway operators. JR East provides access via the Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tōhoku Line (local trains only), Tōkaidō Line, Yokosuka Line, and Jōban Line (Rapid and Local-Futsuu services). However, it's important to note that many limited express trains (excluding Shōnan service) and Keihin-Tōhoku Line rapid trains do not stop here. Additionally, the station is served by the Toei Subway Asakusa Line and Tokyo Metro Ginza Line. The Yurikamome line also originates here, offering scenic views towards Odaiba. Although Uchisaiwaicho Station (Toei Mita Line) is only about 230 meters northwest, it's not an official transfer point.

Station History

Opened on December 16, 1909, Shimbashi Station has a rich history, initially known as Karasumori Station until 1914. Over its 116 years of operation, it has evolved into one of Tokyo's busiest stations, reflecting the city's dynamic growth and development.

Travel Tips

Given its central location and extensive network, Shimbashi Station is an excellent starting point for exploring Tokyo. Its proximity to Ginza makes it ideal for shopping and dining. For those heading to Odaiba, the Yurikamome line offers a unique elevated train experience. Be mindful that some express services bypass Shimbashi, so always check your train's stopping pattern.
