Okkawa Station has been serving the community since its opening on December 7, 1933. Historically, there were plans to develop Okkawa as a branching station for an airport access line to Chubu Centrair International Airport, highlighting its potential strategic importance in the region's transportation network. In fiscal year 2018, the station recorded an average daily ridership of 1178 passengers.
