This massive transportation hub is easily accessible, surrounded by major department stores like Seibu Ikebukuro Honten, fashion buildings, and numerous restaurants, making it a vibrant commercial and entertainment district. Its central position makes it a crucial interchange for commuters traveling between the city center and residential areas, particularly those in Saitama Prefecture.

Railway Lines

Ikebukuro Station is a colossal terminal served by four railway companies and eight lines. JR East operates the Yamanote Line and Saikyō Line (part of the Akabane Line), with the Shōnan-Shinjuku Line also passing through. Tokyo Metro provides extensive subway access via the Marunouchi Line, Yūrakuchō Line, and Fukutoshin Line. The Yūrakuchō and Fukutoshin lines offer direct through-services to Tobu Tojo Line and Seibu Ikebukuro Line/Seibu Yūrakuchō Line, and the Fukutoshin Line also connects to the Tokyu Toyoko Line and Minatomirai Line. Additionally, it serves as the Tokyo terminal for the private Seibu Ikebukuro Line and Tobu Tojo Line.

Station History

While the area was purely rural when the Japan Railway Shinagawa Line (predecessor to the Yamanote Line) opened in 1885, Ikebukuro Station itself was established later. Its creation was a strategic decision to bypass potential expansion issues at Mejiro Station, leading to its opening on January 20, 1954, for the Tokyo Metro lines. The station's development transformed the surrounding area into the major urban center it is today, driven by its increasing importance as a railway junction.
