Location & Access

Umi-Shibaura Station is an exceptionally unique railway station situated within the grounds of Toshiba's Keihin Product Operations in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama. Due to its location, the only exit from the station leads directly into the Toshiba facility. Consequently, only Toshiba employees with valid ID cards and invited visitors are permitted to exit the station and enter the company premises. However, a small public park, Umi-Shiba Park, is adjacent to the station platform, offering scenic views of Tokyo Bay and bridges. Visitors can enjoy these views while waiting for their return train, as there is no pedestrian exit from the station or park for unauthorized individuals.

Railway Lines

The station serves as the terminus for the Umi-Shibaura branch of the Tsurumi Line, operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It is designated with station number JI 52 and is considered part of the "Yokohama City" area under JR's specified ward system. The preceding station on the Tsurumi Line is Shin-Shibaura (JI 51).

Station History

Umi-Shibaura Station officially opened its doors on November 1, 1940. For over 80 years, it has served as a vital transportation link primarily for Toshiba's operations, while also offering a peculiar, yet charming, destination for railway enthusiasts and those seeking a unique waterfront view.

Travel Tips

If you plan to visit Umi-Shibaura Station, remember that you cannot leave the station area unless you are a Toshiba employee or an invited guest. However, the adjacent Umi-Shiba Park provides a pleasant spot to enjoy the coastal scenery. Be sure to check the train schedule carefully, as you must return by train. It's a perfect spot for a short, scenic detour for those interested in industrial landscapes and unique railway experiences.
