Tamana Station is centrally located in Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. While it serves as the city's main station, the role of wide-area transport shifted to Shin-Tamana Station, located approximately 3 km to the northeast, with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen. Despite this, Tamana Station remains a vital hub for local residents and visitors exploring the immediate area.

Railway Lines

The station is operated by JR Kyushu and is an integral part of the Kagoshima Main Line. All regular passenger trains stop here, with several morning, evening, and midday services originating or terminating at Tamana. Before the Kyushu Shinkansen's introduction, the station was a stop for limited express trains like "Relay Tsubame" and "Ariake." Today, it ranks 8th in terms of passenger numbers within Kumamoto Prefecture.

Station History

Tamana Station has a long history, having first opened its doors on April 1, 1891, under the name Takase. It was renamed Tamana Station on April 10, 1956. The station features one side platform and one island platform, with a total of three tracks. It is a staffed station with a Midori no Madoguchi (ticket window) available, albeit outsourced.

Although high-speed Shinkansen services are at Shin-Tamana, this station is perfect for exploring local attractions via the Kagoshima Main Line.
