Railway Lines
As a major junction, Takasaki Station is operated by JR East, JR Freight, and the private railway operator Jōshin Dentetsu. It is a crucial interchange point for both the Joetsu Shinkansen and the Hokuriku Shinkansen, connecting Tokyo with Niigata and Kanazawa/Jōetsumyōkō respectively. Numerous JR East conventional lines also converge here, including the Takasaki Line, Shōnan–Shinjuku Line, Ueno–Tokyo Line, Hachikō Line, Jōetsu Line, Ryōmō Line, Agatsuma Line, and Shin'etsu Main Line. The Jōshin Line also originates here, offering local connections.
Station History
Takasaki Station boasts a long and rich history, having opened on May 1, 1884. It has long flourished as a critical transportation nexus, functioning as a major terminal with nine lines converging, making it the largest in Gunma Prefecture and one of the foremost in Northern Kanto. Before the Shinkansen era, it served as the branching point for lines heading towards Joetsu and Shin'etsu from Tokyo. While long-distance conventional services have largely shifted to the Shinkansen, Takasaki Station continues its role as a vital terminal for local lines across Gunma Prefecture.

With its extensive network, Takasaki Station is an excellent starting point for exploring Gunma Prefecture's attractions, from hot springs to scenic mountains. The station is staffed and includes a Midori no Madoguchi (ticket office) for convenient ticket purchases. Allow ample time for transfers, especially between Shinkansen and conventional lines, due to the station's size and numerous platforms.
