Its name, Tajimakōkōmae (田島高校前), literally means "in front of Tajima High School," indicating its primary purpose as the closest access point for students and staff of the local high school. While the high school's name has changed as of 2023 due to integration, the station retains its original designation, reflecting its historical connection to the institution.

Tajimakōkōmae Station first opened its doors on December 1, 1951, under the name Tabehara. It operated under this name until 1987 when it was renamed to Tajimakōkōmae, aligning with its role in serving the local high school.
