Tagawa-Gotōji Station is a prominent railway junction situated in the city of Tagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture. This staffed station, equipped with a Midori no Madoguchi (ticket office), serves as a vital transportation hub for both local residents and visitors exploring the Chikuhō region.
Railway Lines
The station is jointly operated by the Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) and the third-sector railway operator Heisei Chikuhō Railway. This extensive network connects Tagawa-Gotōji to various destinations, including Yoake, Kokura, Shin-Iizuka, and Kanada.
Station History
Originally opened on February 5, 1896, under the name Gotōji, the station has a long history of serving the region. It was renamed Tagawa-Gotōji in 1982. A unique aspect of the station's modern history is the acquisition of naming rights by the discount shop chain MrMax for the Heisei Chikuhō part of the station. Since April 1, 2009, this section has been officially known as MrMax Tagawa-Gotōji Station, reflecting a growing trend of corporate sponsorship in Japanese railway stations.
Travel Tips
As a major junction, Tagawa-Gotōji Station offers convenient transfers between different railway lines. Travelers should pay attention to the specific operator (JR Kyushu or Heisei Chikuhō Railway) for their intended journey, especially given the dual naming convention.
