Shishiorikarakuwa Station is situated in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. While it originally operated as a railway station, its infrastructure was severely impacted by the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. As a result, the former railway line has been replaced by a provisional Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Today, it functions as a BRT bus stop, providing essential transportation services to the local community in the Shinhamacho area.
Railway Lines
Historically, Shishiorikarakuwa Station was part of the JR East Ōfunato Line, connecting various points in the region. Before its closure, it featured a single side platform. The station was positioned between Kami-Shishiori, heading towards Sakari, and Kesennuma, heading towards Ichinoseki. Although the railway tracks are no longer in operation at this location, the BRT system continues to follow a similar route, maintaining connectivity for passengers.
Station History
Shishiorikarakuwa Station first opened its doors to passengers on March 19, 1932. For many years, it was known simply as Shishiori Station, a name it held until 1985 when it was renamed Shishiorikarakuwa. The station served the community for nearly 80 years until its closure on March 11, 2011, due to the catastrophic natural disaster. Its transformation into a BRT stop marks a significant adaptation in the region's transportation infrastructure.
