Location & Access
Shin-Ōsaka Station, located in Yodogawa-ku, Osaka, is a crucial transportation nexus for both local and long-distance travelers. Situated approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) north of the older Ōsaka Station, it was strategically built to accommodate the Shinkansen lines without disrupting the city center. The station offers excellent connectivity to central Osaka via the JR Kyoto Line and the Osaka Metro Midōsuji Line, making it easy to reach popular areas like Umeda (Kita) in just a few stops.
Railway Lines
As a primary rail hub, Shin-Ōsaka Station is the western terminus of the high-speed Tōkaidō Shinkansen from Tokyo and the eastern terminus of the San'yō Shinkansen from Fukuoka. These two Shinkansen lines are physically connected, enabling seamless through-services. Additionally, the station is served by the Tōkaidō Main Line (JR Kyoto Line) and the Osaka Metro Midōsuji Line. Future plans include making Shin-Ōsaka the terminus for the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the Chūō Shinkansen (Maglev).
Station History
Opened on September 24, 1964, Shin-Ōsaka Station was inaugurated to coincide with the launch of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. Its construction outside the immediate city center was a forward-thinking decision to overcome engineering challenges and facilitate the expansion of Japan's high-speed rail network. Over its 60-year history, it has grown into one of Japan's busiest stations, serving nearly 140,000 daily passengers in FY 2023.
