Location & Access

Shimofunato Station was formerly located in Ōfunato, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. While the original railway station no longer operates, the area is now served by a provisional bus rapid transit (BRT) line, which effectively replaces the former Ōfunato Line railway service. This BRT stop is situated in Ōfunato-chō, Ōfunato City.

Railway Lines

The station was originally part of the JR East Ōfunato Line. This line connected Ichinoseki with Sakari, serving various communities along the coast. Before its closure, Shimofunato Station was situated between Hosoura Station (towards Ichinoseki) and Ōfunato Station (towards Sakari).

Station History

Shimofunato Station first opened its doors in 1934, serving as a vital link for local residents and visitors to the Ōfunato area. However, its operational history came to an abrupt end following the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The damage to the railway infrastructure was so severe that JR East decided to replace the affected section of the Ōfunato Line with a bus rapid transit system, effectively converting Shimofunato Station into a BRT stop.
