Location & Access
Sakurajima Station, located in Konohana-ku, Osaka, serves as the westernmost point of the JR Sakurajima Line (JR Yumesaki Line). While it's situated at the southwest edge of Universal Studios Japan, direct access to the park is exclusively from Universal City Station, the next stop on the line. Sakurajima Station itself is primarily a transportation hub for the surrounding industrial and port areas, though it offers a glimpse into the dynamic Osaka Bay Area.
Railway Lines
The station is the terminus for the JR Sakurajima Line, also known as the JR Yumesaki Line, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West). It features a single island platform serving two tracks, ensuring efficient turnaround for trains. The station was assigned the station number JR-P17 in March 2018, making it easy for travelers to identify on maps and signage.
Station History
Sakurajima Station has a long history, having first opened its doors on April 15, 1910. Interestingly, the station's original location once stood where Universal Studios Japan now entertains millions. The line was rerouted to accommodate the theme park's development, leading to the current station's position. With a daily ridership of 9,809 in 2020, it remains an important local transport link.
Travel Tips
If your destination is Universal Studios Japan, remember to alight at Universal City Station, not Sakurajima. However, if you're exploring the industrial or port areas of Konohana-ku, Sakurajima Station is your ideal gateway. Its terminal status means you'll always find trains ready for departure back towards Nishikujō, making onward connections straightforward.
