The station is primarily operated by the third-sector railway company Shinano Railway, serving the Shinano Railway Line. It is located 50.4 km from Karuizawa. In addition to passenger services, Sakaki Station also boasts a freight terminal operated by the Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight), highlighting its importance in regional logistics. While rapid trains stop during the day, some morning and evening rapid services, as well as the 'Shinano Sunrise' and 'Shinano Sunset' limited express trains, pass through without stopping. Before the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, some 'Asama' limited express trains also stopped here.
