Location & Access
Rikuzen-Togura Station is situated in Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. While it was originally a railway station, its services have been replaced by a provisional Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. This BRT stop serves the local community and provides connections along the former Kesennuma Line route.
Railway Lines
The station was formerly part of the JR East Kesennuma Line. Today, it operates as a bus stop on the Kesennuma Line BRT. The BRT connects Rikuzen-Togura with Rikuzen-Yokoyama towards Maeyachi and Shizugawa towards Sakari, offering essential transportation links in the region.
Station History
Rikuzen-Togura Station first opened in 1977 as a railway station. However, it suffered catastrophic damage during the 2011 tsunami, which completely destroyed the station building and washed away the surrounding railway tracks. Following this devastation, JR East decided to replace the railway services with a Bus Rapid Transit system, adapting to the changed landscape and infrastructure needs of the area.
