Location & Access
Rikuzen-Takata Station was formerly situated in the city of Rikuzentakata, within Iwate Prefecture, Japan. While the original railway station no longer exists, the area is now served by a bus rapid transit (BRT) line, which provides essential transportation links for the community.
Railway Lines
Prior to its destruction, Rikuzen-Takata Station was an integral part of the JR East Ōfunato Line. It was located 85.4 km from Ichinoseki, serving as a key stop between Takekoma (towards Ichinoseki) and Wakinosawa (towards Sakari). The station featured two side platforms and was staffed.
Station History
Rikuzen-Takata Station first opened its doors on December 15, 1933, serving the local community for nearly eight decades. Tragically, its operation ceased on March 11, 2011, when the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami struck. The station, along with much of the surrounding infrastructure, was completely destroyed. In the aftermath, the railway line was not rebuilt, and a bus rapid transit system was implemented to restore public transport services to the area.

While the railway station itself is gone, visitors to Rikuzentakata can still explore the area and learn about its resilience. The BRT line offers a convenient way to travel through the region.
