Location & Access
Rikuzen-Hashikami Station (陸前階上駅) is situated in Kesennuma, a city in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. While it was originally a railway station, its services have since been replaced by a provisional Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line operated by JR East. The station's coordinates are 38°50′14″N 141°34′49″E, placing it along the scenic coast of Miyagi Prefecture.
Railway Lines
The station was formerly part of the JR East Kesennuma Line, a route that connected Maeyachi to Kesennuma. It was located 61.6 km from Maeyachi. Before its closure, the station featured one island platform. Today, the Kesennuma Line BRT serves the area, providing essential transportation links to the communities affected by the 2011 disaster.
Station History
Rikuzen-Hashikami Station first opened its doors on February 11, 1957, serving the local residents and visitors to the Kesennuma area. However, its operation as a railway station came to an end on March 11, 2011, when it sustained significant damage from the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Following the disaster, JR East made the decision to replace the damaged railway line with a more resilient bus rapid transit system to restore connectivity to the region.
