Location & Access
Ōyakaigan Station is situated in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. While it was once a railway station, it now serves as a bus stop for the Kesennuma Line BRT (Bus Rapid Transit). This makes it accessible via bus services, connecting it to other parts of the region.
Railway Lines
Originally, Ōyakaigan Station was part of the JR East Kesennuma Line, located 58.3 km from Maeyachi. Following the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the railway services were suspended. The line has since been replaced by a provisional bus rapid transit system, maintaining a vital transport link for the community.
Station History
Opened on February 11, 1957, Ōyakaigan Station was initially known as Ōya until 1997. It was famously known as the station closest to a swimming beach in Japan and was co-located with Michi-no-Eki Ōyakaigan (Roadside Station Ōyakaigan). The station ceased railway operations on March 11, 2011, due to the tsunami damage, transitioning to its current BRT bus stop status.
Travel Tips
Visitors to Ōyakaigan can still enjoy the coastal scenery that once made the station famous. The nearby Michi-no-Eki Ōyakaigan offers amenities and local products. Although trains no longer run, the BRT provides a convenient way to explore the beautiful coastline of Kesennuma.
