Location & Access
Otomo Station, or Otomo-eki (おとも駅), was formerly a railway station operated by JR East, located in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Today, it functions as a bus stop for the Ōfunato Line BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), serving the local community in Otomo-cho. While the original railway infrastructure is gone, the BRT provides essential transportation links for residents and visitors to the area.
Railway Lines
Originally, Otomo Station was an integral part of the JR East Ōfunato Line, situated 92.8 km from Ichinoseki. It featured two side platforms and was an at-grade, staffed station. The station served as a crucial stop between Wakinosawa (towards Ichinoseki) and Hosoura (towards Sakari) for train services.
Station History
Otomo Station first opened its doors on December 15, 1933, serving the Ōfunato Line for decades. However, its operational history as a railway station tragically ended on March 11, 2011, when it, along with most of the surrounding structures, was destroyed by the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Following this disaster, the railway line was replaced by a provisional bus rapid transit line, and Otomo now operates as a BRT bus stop.

While the railway station no longer exists, visitors interested in the history and resilience of the region can still visit the site via the Ōfunato Line BRT. This offers a unique perspective on the area's recovery and the innovative transportation solutions implemented post-disaster.
