Okutsugaru-Imabetsu Station is situated in Imabetsu, a town within Aomori Prefecture on the northern tip of Japan's main island, Honshu. This station holds a unique geographical significance as it is the final stop on Honshu for the Hokkaido Shinkansen before trains plunge into the depths of the Seikan Tunnel, connecting Honshu with Hokkaido. While somewhat remote, its strategic location makes it a crucial gateway for travelers heading to or from Hokkaido.
Railway Lines
The station primarily serves the Hokkaido Shinkansen, operated by JR Hokkaido, offering high-speed rail connections. Historically, the station site was also home to Tsugaru-Imabetsu Station, which served the Kaikyo Line. This former station was closed and rebuilt to accommodate the Shinkansen, marking a significant upgrade in regional transportation infrastructure. The station features two side platforms and two tracks, designed to handle the high-speed Shinkansen services.
Station History
The original station at this location, Tsugaru-Imabetsu, opened on March 13, 1988. It served the Kaikyo Line, which utilized the Seikan Tunnel for conventional rail services. In anticipation of the Hokkaido Shinkansen's opening, the station underwent a major reconstruction and was renamed Okutsugaru-Imabetsu in 2016, coinciding with the Shinkansen's inauguration. The former Tsugaru-Imabetsu station was officially abolished the day before the Shinkansen station's opening, seamlessly transitioning the site to its new high-speed role.

As Okutsugaru-Imabetsu is a Shinkansen station, it offers a convenient point for travelers to access the remote northern reaches of Aomori Prefecture or to make a quick stop before or after traversing the Seikan Tunnel. While the immediate vicinity might not boast major tourist attractions, the journey itself, especially the passage through the Seikan Tunnel, is an experience.
