Station History

Opened on April 1, 1891, Mojikō Station played a crucial role as the gateway to Kyushu island before the Kanmon Railway Tunnel opened in 1942. It was a bustling hub with frequent ferry services connecting to Shimonoseki Station on the Honshu side of the Kanmon Straits. The station building itself is recognized as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government, a distinction it shares with only one other active station building in Japan (Tokyo Station's Marunouchi Building). In a 2007 survey by Nikkei, it was ranked as the number one station people wanted to visit.
