Miyajimaguchi Station (宮島口駅) is strategically situated in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, making it the essential transit point for travelers heading to the iconic Miyajima island (Itsukushima), famous for its 'floating' torii gate. From the pier conveniently located near the station, passengers can easily board ferries operated by JR Miyajima Ferry and Miyajima Matsudai Kisen, offering frequent services to the island.
Railway Lines
The station is operated by the West Japan Railway Company (JR West) and is a vital stop on the Sanyō Main Line, identified by the station code JR-R10. It is located 326.5 km from Kobe. Miyajimaguchi Station features one side platform and one island platform, accommodating three tracks. It serves various train services including the Sanyō Line City Liner, Rapid, Local, and the West Express Ginga, connecting passengers to destinations like Hiroshima, Iwakuni, and Shimonoseki.
Station History
Miyajimaguchi Station has a rich history, having been opened on September 25, 1897, making it over 128 years old. Interestingly, it was known simply as 'Miyajima' until 1942. Until 2009, when the ferry operations were spun off, the station was also considered a railway ferry terminal for the Miyajima Ferry. Today, it remains a staffed station with a Midori no Madoguchi (ticket office), ensuring convenient service for its numerous passengers, with an average daily ridership of 4309 in FY2019.
