Location & Access
Minami-Kesennuma Station (南気仙沼駅), or Minami-Kesennuma-eki, was formerly located in the city of Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Situated in the Nakacho area, it served as a vital transportation hub for the local community. Following its destruction in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the original railway services have been replaced by a provisional Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, which now operates as a bus stop for the Kesennuma Line BRT.
Railway Lines
The station originally served the JR East Kesennuma Line, connecting passengers to various destinations. Before its closure, it featured one island platform. The preceding station on the line was Matsuiwa (towards Kogota), and the following station was Fudōnosawa (towards Kesennuma). While the railway tracks are no longer in operation at this specific location, the BRT system continues to provide essential public transport along the former railway corridor.
Station History
Minami-Kesennuma Station first opened its doors on February 11, 1957, becoming an integral part of the local railway network. For over five decades, it facilitated travel for residents and visitors alike. However, its operational history came to an abrupt end on March 11, 2011, when the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami caused irreparable damage to the station and the surrounding infrastructure. The decision was made to convert the railway line into a BRT system to restore connectivity to the affected areas.
Travel Tips
While the original railway station no longer exists, visitors to Kesennuma can still utilize the Kesennuma Line BRT to explore the region. The BRT offers a convenient way to travel and observe the ongoing recovery efforts in the area. It's advisable to check the latest BRT schedules and routes before planning your journey to ensure a smooth travel experience.
