Location & Access
Matsushima Station (松島駅) is situated in the picturesque town of Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. While it serves as a key transportation hub for the area, visitors aiming for the main tourist attractions of Matsushima Bay should note that Matsushima-Kaigan Station on the Senseki Line is approximately 2 kilometers away and generally more convenient for direct access to sightseeing spots. Matsushima Station is about 1 km from Takagimachi Station.
Railway Lines
The station is operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and is exclusively served by the Tōhoku Main Line. It is located 375.2 kilometers from Tokyo, making it an important stop on this major railway artery. The section between Shiogama Station and Matsushima Station boasts the longest inter-station distance on the entire Tōhoku Main Line.
Station History
Matsushima Station officially opened its doors on July 9, 1956. Interestingly, it was initially known as Shin-Matsushima Station until 1962. Historical records also indicate the existence of an earlier Matsushima Station on an old line between Iwakiri Station and Hiraizumi Station, adding a layer of rich railway heritage to the area.
Travel Tips
For travelers visiting Matsushima, it's crucial to distinguish between Matsushima Station and Matsushima-Kaigan Station. While Matsushima Station offers connections on the Tōhoku Main Line, Matsushima-Kaigan Station is the preferred gateway for exploring the famous Matsushima Bay, known for its scenic islands. Matsushima Station is a staffed station with a "Midori no Madoguchi" (ticket office), providing convenient services for passengers.
