Location & Access
Matsuiwa Station was situated in the city of Kesennuma, within Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Although the physical station no longer exists, its former location was an important point along the Kesennuma Line. Today, the area is served by a provisional bus rapid transit (BRT) line, which has taken over the transportation role previously fulfilled by the railway.
Railway Lines
Before its destruction, Matsuiwa Station was part of the JR East network, specifically serving the Kesennuma Line. It was located 65.6 km from Maeyachi Station, with Saichi as the preceding station towards Kogota and Minami-Kesennuma as the following station towards Kesennuma. The station featured a single side platform.
Station History
Matsuiwa Station first opened its doors on February 11, 1957, providing railway services to the local community for over five decades. Tragically, the station's operational history came to an abrupt end on March 11, 2011, when it was destroyed by the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. This natural disaster led to the permanent closure of the station and the subsequent conversion of its services to a BRT system.
Travel Tips
While Matsuiwa Station itself is no longer active, visitors to Kesennuma can still explore the region using the modern bus rapid transit system. This offers a convenient way to travel along the former railway route and experience the coastal beauty of Miyagi Prefecture. It's a poignant reminder of the area's resilience and recovery.
