Kurume-Kōkōmae Station opened relatively recently on March 14, 2009. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the first JR Kyushu station to be named after a public high school, and only the second JR station overall to bear such a name. Locally, it is often affectionately shortened to "Kōkōmae Station" (High School Front Station).
