Location & Access

Kokubu Station is conveniently located in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, specifically in Kokubu Chuo 3-chome. As a staffed station, it offers a Midori no Madoguchi (ticket window) for passenger services, albeit outsourced. Travelers will find parking facilities and a bicycle shed available, making it accessible for various modes of transport to and from the station.

Railway Lines

The station is a key stop on the JR Kyushu Nippō Main Line, situated 432.1 km from Kokura. It features one side and one island platform, accommodating three tracks plus two sidings. Kokubu Station is particularly notable as a turnaround point for the majority of local trains from Kagoshima-Chuo and some Limited Express Kirishima services. Consequently, the frequency of local trains heading towards Miyazaki significantly decreases beyond this station, with only nine round trips daily.

Station History

Opened on November 24, 1929, Kokubu Station has a rich history. Interestingly, before 1929, the adjacent Hayato Station bore the name Kokubu Station. Historically, the Ōsumi Line also extended from this station towards Shibushi Station. For a period until March 17, 2007, prior to the partial opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen, Kokubu Station held the distinction of having the latest final train departure time in Kagoshima Prefecture. This record was then passed to Kawauchi Station on the Kagoshima Main Line the following day.

Travel Tips

When planning your journey on the Nippō Main Line, especially if traveling beyond Kokubu towards Miyazaki, be mindful of the reduced train frequency. The station's facilities, including parking and a bicycle shed, are beneficial for those exploring the Kirishima area. With its staffed ticket window, passengers can easily purchase tickets and get assistance for their travels.
