Koganezawa Station (小金沢駅) was situated in the city of Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. While the original railway station no longer exists, its former location is now served by a bus stop on the Kesennuma Line BRT (Bus Rapid Transit). This area, specifically Hon-Yoshi-cho Koganezawa, offers a glimpse into the resilient spirit of the region following the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
Railway Lines
Originally, Koganezawa Station was an integral part of the Kesennuma Line, operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). This line connected various communities along the coast. Today, the Kesennuma Line BRT provides essential transportation services, maintaining connectivity for residents and visitors. The BRT route continues to serve destinations like Motoyoshi towards Maeyachi and Ōyakaigan towards Sakari, following the general path of the former railway line.
Station History
Koganezawa Station first opened its doors on February 11, 1957, serving the local community for over five decades. Tragically, its operational history came to an abrupt end on March 11, 2011, when the station was completely destroyed by the catastrophic Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Following this immense natural disaster, JR East made the decision to replace the damaged railway infrastructure with a provisional bus rapid transit line, transforming the former station into a BRT bus stop.
