Location & Access
Kanose Station (鹿瀬駅, Kanose-eki) is situated in the town of Aga, within the Higashikanbara District of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. This unstaffed station serves as a local hub for residents and visitors to the area. Historically, it was the center of the former Kanose town, indicating its significance to the local community.
Railway Lines
The station is operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and is exclusively served by the Ban'etsu West Line. It is located 133.6 km from Kōriyama. The preceding station is Hideya towards Kōriyama, and the following station is Tsugawa towards Niitsu. While the rapid 'SL Ban'etsu Monogatari' train passes through due to platform length restrictions, the line is notable for a landslide-prone zone between Kanose and Tsugawa, where speed limits are enforced (30 km/h for 'SL Ban'etsu Monogatari' and 35 km/h for other trains).
Station History
Kanose Station officially opened its doors on November 1, 1914. In its earlier days, the station also handled freight, highlighting its role in the local economy and transportation network beyond just passenger services.
Travel Tips
As an unstaffed station, travelers should be aware of ticket purchasing options in advance. The scenic Ban'etsu West Line offers beautiful views, especially during autumn. Despite the speed restrictions in certain sections, the journey provides a unique glimpse into the Japanese countryside.
