Kagoshima-Chūō Station, literally "Kagoshima Central Station," is a pivotal transportation hub located in the heart of Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Railway Lines
Operated by the Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu), Kagoshima-Chūō Station holds the distinction of being the southernmost high-speed Shinkansen railway terminal in Japan. It serves as the terminus for the Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, connecting Kagoshima with major cities like Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Honshu. Beyond the Shinkansen, it's a significant terminal for numerous conventional lines, including the Kagoshima Main Line and the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line, offering connections to popular destinations such as Miyazaki, Kirishima, and Ibusuki via limited express and scenic tourist trains. Despite the formal end of the Kagoshima Main Line and Nippo Main Line being at Kagoshima Station, Kagoshima-Chūō significantly surpasses it in scale and passenger volume.
Station History
Opened on October 11, 1913, the station has undergone several name changes throughout its history. Initially known as Take Station until 1927, it was then renamed Nishi-Kagoshima Station until 2004, when it adopted its current name, Kagoshima-Chūō Station. This renaming coincided with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen, solidifying its role as the central station for the region.
