Location & Access
Iwami-Kawamoto Station was situated in Kawamoto, Ōchi District, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. While the station itself is no longer operational, the area remains accessible by local transportation. The station's coordinates are 34°59′29″N 132°29′34″E, placing it in a scenic part of rural Shimane.
Although the railway line is defunct, the location previously offered connections to bus services, providing a link to the surrounding community and other regional destinations. Visitors interested in exploring the area can still reach Kawamoto by bus or private vehicle.
Railway Lines
Iwami-Kawamoto Station was a key stop on the Sankō Line, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West). The Sankō Line, known for its picturesque route through the Japanese countryside, connected Miyoshi Station in Hiroshima Prefecture with Gōtsu Station in Shimane Prefecture.
Unfortunately, due to declining ridership and operational costs, the entire Sankō Line, including Iwami-Kawamoto Station, ceased operations on April 1, 2018. This closure marked the end of an era for many communities along the line.
Station History
The station first opened its doors in 1934, serving the local community for over eight decades. Throughout its operational history, Iwami-Kawamoto Station played an important role in connecting residents of Kawamoto to other parts of Shimane Prefecture and beyond.
Its closure in 2018, following the discontinuation of the Sankō Line, was a significant event for the region. While the trains no longer run, the memory of the station and the railway line lives on in local history and the hearts of those who used it.
