Location & Access
Iiyama Station is situated in the city of Iiyama, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Its strategic location makes it a gateway to the region's renowned ski resorts, including Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort and Madarao Kogen Ski Resort. The station is a staffed facility with a "Midori no Madoguchi" (ticket office) and offers bus connections to various destinations, particularly popular during the winter sports season.
Railway Lines
The station is a crucial interchange, serving both the local Iiyama Line, operated by JR East, and the high-speed Hokuriku Shinkansen. Since March 14, 2015, the Shinkansen has provided a rapid link between Tokyo and Kanazawa, significantly boosting accessibility to Iiyama. The station features one island platform and two side platforms, accommodating four tracks.
Travel Tips
During the winter months, Iiyama Station becomes a bustling hub, with approximately 80% of Shinkansen users being skiers. The majority of these travelers (around 90%) arrive from and depart towards Tokyo. Weekends and holidays see a significantly higher volume of passengers compared to weekdays, often resulting in queues for buses heading to the nearby ski resorts. Planning your travel, especially during peak season, is advisable to avoid delays.
