Location & Access

Hinagu-Onsen Station is conveniently located in the Hinagu Shio Kitamachi area of Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Situated within the residential district of Hinagu and serving one of Yatsushiro's few tourist destinations, the Hinagu Onsen hot spring town, the station sees a relatively high number of commuters and tourists. Its strategic location makes it an essential stop for those visiting the renowned hot springs.

Railway Lines

The station is served by the Hisatsu Orange Railway, a third-sector railway company. It bears the station code OR03. Hinagu-Onsen Station is a significant stop on the line, with all trains except some special temporary services and freight trains making a stop here. Historically, during the Japanese National Railways (JNR) and JR Kyushu eras, some limited express trains also stopped at Hinagu-Onsen, highlighting its importance.

Station History

Hinagu-Onsen Station first opened its doors on July 15, 1923, under the name Hinagu, operated by the Japanese Government Railways. It was later renamed Hinagu-Onsen Station in 2019. From March 15, 2025, the station will also feature a sub-station name acquired through naming rights by U-STYLE, a Yatsushiro company. This new sub-name, "Welcome! To the Town Where Japan's Best Chikuwan Was Born," celebrates Chikuwan, the local mascot of Hinagu and the winner of Yuru-Verse 2024.

Travel Tips

As a gateway to the Hinagu Onsen hot springs, the station is an ideal starting point for exploring the area's therapeutic baths and traditional atmosphere. Visitors can easily access the various ryokans and public baths from the station. The presence of the popular local mascot, Chikuwan, adds a unique charm to the station, especially with the upcoming sub-station name. Keep an eye out for Chikuwan-themed souvenirs or events when you visit!
