Location & Access
Higashi-Kokura Station is situated in Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Specifically, it can be found at Takahama 1-chome. While it no longer handles passenger or freight trains, its historical significance lies in its connection to the Kagoshima Main Line and the Hitahikosan Line.
Railway Lines
The station is officially part of the Kagoshima Main Line, operated by JR Freight. Historically, it also served as the terminal for the Kokura Railway, the predecessor of the Hitahikosan Line. Although the station is not officially closed, it currently sees no train traffic.
Station History
Higashi-Kokura Station opened on April 1, 1915, as a passenger station for the Kokura Railway. In May 1943, it was reestablished on the Kagoshima Main Line, integrating with the Tomino signal box, which had been established in 1904. Passenger services ceased on November 19, 1956, and the freight-only section of the Hitahikosan Line closed in 1962. Freight operations on the Kagoshima Main Line continued until March 23, 2002, when the new Kitakyūshū Freight Terminal opened.
Travel Tips
As Higashi-Kokura Station no longer handles any train services, it is not a destination for active rail travel. However, its historical context might be of interest to railway enthusiasts exploring the industrial heritage of Kitakyūshū.
