Location & Access
Hidaka-Mombetsu Station was situated in Hidaka, Hokkaido, Japan. While the station itself is located in a scenic part of Hokkaido, direct rail access is currently unavailable. Travelers wishing to visit the area would need to consider alternative transportation methods, such as buses or private vehicles, to reach Hidaka town.
Railway Lines
The station was part of the Hidaka Main Line, a railway operated by the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido). Unfortunately, the 116 km section of the line between Mukawa and Samani, which includes Hidaka-Mombetsu Station, has been indefinitely suspended since January 2015. This suspension was a direct result of significant storm damage, impacting the connectivity of this coastal region.
Station History
Hidaka-Mombetsu Station first opened its doors on September 6, 1924, initially under the simpler name of Mombetsu Station. It was subsequently renamed Hidaka-Mombetsu on February 10, 1925, to distinguish it from other locations. Following the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR) on April 1, 1987, the station came under the management of JR Hokkaido. Notably, until October 1986, it was a stop for the 'Erimo' express train, highlighting its past importance as a transportation hub.
Travel Tips
Given the indefinite suspension of train services, travelers planning to visit the Hidaka region should research current transportation options. While the station itself is no longer active for passenger trains, the area around Hidaka offers natural beauty and local culture. It's advisable to check local bus schedules or consider renting a car for exploring this part of Hokkaido.
