Station History

Akaji Station officially opened its doors on October 1, 1990. Interestingly, its name has undergone a couple of changes. Initially, it was planned to be written with the kanji "赤地" (Akaji), but due to its similarity to Akaike Station on the same line, it was changed to the hiragana "あかじ". However, as "赤字" (akaji) can also mean 'in the red' or 'deficit', it was later renamed to "あかぢ" (Akadi/Akaji) to avoid this negative connotation. The Romanization also shifted from "AKAJI" to "AKADI" accordingly.
