Location & Access

Akabuchi Station (赤渕駅) is situated in the town of Shizukuishi, within Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East), it serves as a key point along the Tazawako Line. The station is unstaffed, meaning travelers should be prepared for self-service ticketing or have their tickets pre-purchased.

Railway Lines

The station is exclusively served by the Tazawako Line, connecting Morioka to Ōmagari. Akabuchi Station is located 22.0 km from Morioka. It's a significant operational point, as many trains originating from Morioka often terminate or turn back here or at the preceding Shizukuishi Station. This results in fewer train services between Akabuchi and Tazawako Station, which is nearly 20 km away across the prefectural border. Interestingly, the Akita Shinkansen 'Komachi' also makes operational stops here for train exchanges at certain times.

Travel Tips

Due to the reduced frequency of trains beyond Akabuchi towards Tazawako, especially with many services turning back here, it's crucial for travelers planning to continue further along the Tazawako Line to check train schedules carefully. The station marks the boundary between JR East's Morioka Branch and Akita Branch, with the latter taking over management from Tazawako Station onwards.
