Nakiryu is one of Tokyo's most acclaimed ramen destinations, famous for a tantanmen so refined it has earned consistent Michelin recognition. Located in the residential district of Minamiotsuka, it's not a place you stumble upon, but one you plan a trip for. The main event is the signature tantanmen, a meticulously constructed bowl that sets it apart from typical ramen shops.

Diners consistently praise the balance of the tantanmen's broth: a dense, nutty layer of sesame and peanut paste sits atop a clear, deeply savoury base of chicken and oyster, creating a complex flavour profile with a subtle acidic finish. This is served with thin, house-made noodles that maintain their springy texture. The house shrimp wontons, with their delicate wrappers and punchy filling, are another highlight. While most come for the tantanmen, Nakiryu also offers occasional creative bowls, such as a rich curry ramen or a beef-topped special.

The main challenge for visitors is the strict ticketing system. You must arrive early in the morning to get a ticket for a specific 30-minute dining slot later that day. Some non-Japanese visitors have reported being told off brusquely by staff for waiting in the wrong place, so it's important to follow instructions precisely. The shop also has occasional unexpected closures, making it wise to check their social media before you go.

Despite the effort, most find it to be excellent value. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥1,300 for the signature tantanmen, with popular add-ons like shrimp wontons for ¥600 or a seasoned egg for ¥200. A full bowl with extras typically costs between ¥1,500 and ¥2,000.

  • Booking: A same-day ticket system is in place. Arrive at the shop from 8:00 AM to get a ticket from a tablet for a timed slot later that day. Reservations are mandatory; you cannot walk in and be seated.
  • Getting There: Nakiryu is a 5-minute walk from the north exit of Shin-Otsuka Station (Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line) or a 6-minute walk from the south exit of Otsuka Station (JR Yamanote Line).
  • Payment: Cash only. The ticket machine does not accept credit cards, electronic money, or QR code payments.
  • Seating: The small restaurant has about 12 seats, primarily at a counter, with a few small tables.
  • Family: Children and strollers are welcome.
  • Rules: The restaurant is non-smoking. There is no parking available. Staff strictly enforce rules about where to wait for your time slot.
