Kusunoki Honten (くすのき 本店) is a destination for diners seeking tempura elevated to an art form. Chef Motoyoshi Kusunoki’s approach is one of near-obsessive precision, focusing on two key elements: an ultra-light, almost invisible batter and masterful control over heat. This technique allows the pure flavour of each seasonal ingredient to shine, whether it’s delicate whitefish, sweet aged pumpkin, or luxury items like abalone and sea urchin.

Guests consistently praise the ethereal quality of the tempura, with many noting that the paper beneath it remains free of oil. The cooking is described as perfect, from slightly rare shrimp to meltingly soft salmon. The intimate, theatrical experience at the six-seat counter is a major draw, as is the omakase menu’s progression, which often presents the same ingredient in multiple forms. The more accessible lunch, featuring the signature ‘bara-tendon’ (a scattered tempura rice bowl), is frequently cited as a lifetime-calibre meal. Non-Japanese visitors report feeling warmly welcomed.

The main drawback noted by reviewers is the very high price of dinner, with bills running into the tens of thousands of yen. Reservations are also extremely difficult to secure. Some find the lunch service brief, at around 30–45 minutes, and drinks are considered expensive. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥5,500 for the lunch bara-tendon, while a craft beer could be ¥1,980 and oolong tea ¥880. Full dinner omakase experiences were cited at ¥80,000 to over ¥100,000 per person. For a food-focused traveller celebrating a special occasion, the experience offers excellent value, but it is not a casual or budget-friendly choice.
