Yudaki Falls is a prominent and powerful waterfall located at the head of Lake Yunoko in Nikko National Park. It is distinguished by its fan-shaped cascade, which tumbles 70 meters down a rocky slope over a width of 110 meters. The falls are an integral part of the Yukawa River system, which flows through Lake Yunoko, the Senjogahara marshland, and eventually feeds into Lake Chuzenji via Ryuzu Falls and Kegon Falls. Its accessibility and the opportunity to view it from multiple vantage points make it a significant natural landmark in the region.
Visitors frequently highlight the sheer power and volume of water, especially after rainfall or during the spring thaw. Many describe it as "majestic" and "impressive," often noting its larger scale compared to other waterfalls in the area. The ability to get very close to the falls, particularly from the observation deck at the base, is a consistent point of praise. Reviewers also appreciate the peaceful and calm atmosphere, especially when visiting in the morning or during off-peak seasons, contrasting it with more crowded attractions. The surrounding nature, including the Japanese oak and bamboo forests, and the autumn foliage, are frequently mentioned as enhancing the beauty of the falls. Some visitors even report seeing monkeys near the waterside.
For a comprehensive experience, it is highly recommended to view the falls from both the bottom and the top. The walk from the bottom to the top, though described by some as "pretty tough" due to the steep stairs, offers varying perspectives and is considered worthwhile. Many suggest starting at the top (near Lake Yunoko) and walking down, as this allows for a gradual appreciation of the falls. Allow at least 1-2 hours to fully explore the falls and the immediate surrounding area, including the short circular track to Kotaki Falls. Early morning visits are ideal for tranquility and fewer crowds. Bringing a bear bell is suggested by some, though bear sightings are rare. There are tea houses and snack shops near the base, offering refreshments and local treats like daifuku and grilled river fish.
Yudaki Falls is easily accessible by bus. It is located near bus stop 44 or 45 on the Nikko bus line. If you are coming from Kiyotaki, the bus ride takes approximately 45 minutes. For those driving, there are parking options. A paid parking lot is available at the base of the waterfall (around 500¥), while a free but limited parking lot can be found at the top, along Lake Yuno. Many visitors recommend taking the bus to the top (Lake Yunoko) and then hiking down to the falls, or vice versa, to fully experience the surrounding trails. The falls are also a popular starting or ending point for longer hikes through the Senjogahara marshland to Ryuzu Falls.
A common complaint is the potential for crowds during peak autumn foliage season, which can detract from the peaceful experience. To mitigate this, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (late spring, early summer) or arriving early in the morning. Some visitors also note that the waterfall can smell faintly of boiled eggs due to nearby onsen (hot springs), which is a natural characteristic of the area and generally not considered a major deterrent.
