Genkyuen is a traditional Japanese garden, originally built as the rear garden of Rakurakuen (Tsuki Palace) by the Ii family, lords of the Hikone Domain, over 340 years ago. It is a circuit-style garden centered around a large pond, designed to be enjoyed by strolling along its paths. The garden offers picturesque views, including unique perspectives of Hikone Castle's keep rising above the landscape.

Visitors frequently highlight the garden's tranquil atmosphere and its well-maintained beauty, often noting the stunning reflections in the pond. Many appreciate the opportunity to enjoy matcha tea and sweets like Umoregi at the teahouse, Houshoudai, which offers excellent views. The garden is particularly praised during autumn for its vibrant foliage and in winter for its serene, snow-covered scenery. Several reviewers mention that while beautiful, the garden is not overly large, making it a pleasant and manageable addition to a visit to Hikone Castle.

To make the most of your visit, consider purchasing a combined ticket that includes entry to Hikone Castle, the museum, and Genkyuen, as this is often more economical. Allow about 45 minutes to an hour to leisurely explore the garden. Many visitors suggest visiting Genkyuen first, then the castle, and finally the Yumekyubashi castle road. The garden is generally less crowded than the castle, offering a more peaceful experience. If you visit during off-peak times or weekdays, you might even have parts of the garden to yourself.

Genkyuen is conveniently located within the Hikone Castle grounds. From JR Hikone Station, you can walk towards Hikone Castle. If you turn right along the moat in front of the entrance to the Sawayguchi Tamon Yagura (one of the castle gates), you will find the entrance to Genkyuen. Alternatively, some visitors mention following signs and stone steps along the stone wall from the left side of the castle tower to reach the Kuromon ticket office, which provides direct access if you have a joint ticket. Taxis are also an option from Hikone Station for a quicker arrival.

While most visitors have positive experiences, some note that the garden's appeal can vary significantly with the season; early winter, for example, might present a starker landscape compared to the vibrant colors of autumn or spring. To mitigate this, check seasonal photos online before your visit to align expectations. Also, some reviewers suggest that while beautiful, it might not be a primary destination if you've seen many Japanese gardens, but it's an excellent addition if you're already visiting Hikone Castle.
