Храм Мэйдзи
A special, atmospheric place a little off the center of Shibuya — the Shinto Meiji Shrine. It was built in honor of Emperor Meiji and his wife in 1920. The shrine is surrounded by a dense, man‑planted forest, so when you first step in you feel as if you’ve entered another world, far from skyscrapers and city bustle. The Meiji era brought sweeping and beneficial reforms: abolition of class privileges, economic growth, military strengthening and wider access to education. Because of this the shrine has special significance and symbolizes respect and gratitude to the imperial family. On the shrine grounds there is an unusual pairing of two walls: one made from sake barrels and the other from French wine barrels — a symbol of the cultural exchange between East and West that expanded during the Meiji era.
