Tori Saki (鳥さき) is a direct heir to the famed Torishiki school of yakitori, a style defined by its intense, close-range grilling over high heat. At this intimate counter in Kyoto, the chef orchestrates a theatrical meal, timing each skewer to achieve a perfectly crisp skin while sealing in an unusual amount of moisture. The result is chicken that is remarkably juicy and flavorful.

Guests consistently praise the precision of the cooking and the satisfyingly large portions. Standout skewers include the signature chōchin (an unlaid egg yolk attached to the ovary), tsukune (minced chicken meatball), tebasaki (wing), seseri (neck), and maru hatsu (whole heart). The meal is punctuated by a sweet daikon radish palate cleanser (with free refills), high-quality Namikawa-brand fried tofu, and elegant desserts featuring seasonal fruits like Amaou strawberries or Setoka citrus.

The experience is not without its practical challenges. The restaurant is notoriously difficult to book, the counter seating is tight, and the single omakase course is a lengthy affair, lasting between two and three hours. A few diners have also noted a lack of clarity on the final bill. The famed chōchin skewer is also not guaranteed to be available every night.

The omakase course costs around ¥16,000. Reviewers with a few drinks typically report final bills between ¥21,950 and ¥23,520. While premium sake can push the total significantly higher, most find Tori Saki offers excellent value for a top-tier yakitori experience, justifying the price with its exceptional cooking and polished service.
