Tominokoji Yamagishi (富小路 やま岸) is a stage for seasonal Japanese cuisine, where chef-owner Yamagishi-san builds entire multi-course menus around a single peak ingredient. In winter, it’s all about crab; in spring, bamboo shoots (takenoko); in summer, sea urchin (uni) and pike conger (hamo). The experience is as much about theatre as it is about taste, with showstopping presentations like the winter 'crab tower' and a warm, entertaining chef at the centre of the intimate counter.

Guests consistently praise the exceptional quality of the ingredients and the exacting cooking, particularly the precise application of heat. Creative yet classic dishes are a highlight, with many reviews celebrating the signature cold porridge of uni and junsai (watershield), the various crab preparations from shabu-shabu to rich rice finishes, and the excellent sake list. The final rice course, whether a luxurious take on tamago kake gohan or a seafood-topped bowl, is often cited as a memorable conclusion to the meal.

While most find the experience justifies the price, a recurring point of criticism is the cost versus portion size, especially during the peak crab season when bills can be exceptionally high. A few diners also found that a menu so focused on one ingredient could feel repetitive. However, for most, it's a worthwhile indulgence for a landmark meal in Kyoto.

Dinner is a significant expense, typically falling in the ¥80,000–¥99,999 range. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying between ¥69,800 and ¥77,000 for a standard omakase, while peak crab season dinners were noted to reach as high as ¥115,000.
